The use of the Nominative Case
(1) The nominative case of a noun is the form you find in a dictionary.
house – дом (masculine)
school – шко́ла (feminine)
generation – поколе́ние (neuter)
(2) The nominative is the case used to indicate the subject of a verb:
| Subject – nominative case | Verb | Meaning |
| Кот | гуля́ет. | The cat is walking. |
| Же́нщина | рабо́тает. | The woman is working. |
| Письмо́ | лежи́т. | The letter is lying (on the table) |
(3) There are no words for ‘the’ and ‘a’ in Russian. A noun in the nominative case can mean either:
маши́на (feminine) – a car or the car
стол (masculine) – a table or the table
письмо́ (neuter) – a letter or the letter
(4) There is no present tense of the verb ‘to be’ in Russian. The nominative case will appear with no apparent verb.
